Somewhere in a used EV transaction near you, a buyer and a seller are stuck on the same question: how healthy is the battery, really? An independent EV battery certificate exists to end that standoff, and Australia now has more ways to get one than most people realise.

This guide covers what "independent" actually means, who issues certificates here, what a legitimate one must contain, and the single distinction that separates a certificate worth paying for from one that changes nothing.

What 'independent' means, and why the word is doing all the work

An independent certificate is issued by a third party with no stake in the sale. Not the seller, whose interest in a good number is obvious. And not the car itself, which matters more than people realise: the battery health figure on your dashboard is generated by the vehicle's own management system, an estimate maintained for operating the car, not a measurement taken for a transaction. A car reporting on its own battery is the product grading its own exam.

Independence is what converts a number into evidence. The same 91 per cent means nothing from a seller's screenshot and everything from a third party who gets paid the same whether the result is EXCELLENT or DECLINING. Buyers understand this instinctively, which is why the entire Australian market has spent the past two years reorganising around independent testing, from motoring clubs to auction houses. When Pickles and Manheim certify batteries before vehicles cross the block, that is the institutional market saying independent verification is now the standard. Private sales are simply the last segment to catch up.

Who issues independent EV battery certificates in Australia

The landscape as it stands in mid-2026, fairly described.

NRMA, powered by Aviloo. Australia's largest motoring organisation offers a mobile EV battery health check using Aviloo, the global leader in battery diagnostics. A technician comes to you with an OBD-connected testing device. It costs $300, or $250 for NRMA Rewards members, requires booking about two days ahead, and covers most EVs and plug-in hybrids on the market. A professional option with a trusted name behind it.

Test EV and RedBook Inspect, also Aviloo-powered. Aviloo's Flash test is available through a network of independent testers from around $175, and RedBook Inspect bundles it into pre-purchase vehicle inspections. Both are in-person, hardware-based, and aimed largely at buyers doing due diligence.

mycar, powered by Voltest. Australia's largest service chain offers State of Health reports at selected stores in its 275-plus location network, using Voltest's plug-in OBD2 diagnostic tool, with results generated in minutes at the workshop. Built for people who prefer a physical visit and a face-to-face explanation.

RACQ and other motoring clubs. Queensland's RACQ runs battery health checks through selected locations and mobile units in the state's south-east, and other clubs are moving the same direction.

EV TrustSeal. The one entry on this list with no hardware and no appointment. The audit runs through the Smartcar API, the manufacturer's own read-only data channel, and measures a single ordinary charging session at home that starts below 20 per cent and runs up to 80 per cent, where the system stops the audit automatically. Results arrive within hours of that session finishing, and 24 hours at the outside. The certificate costs $99, paid only once your result is ready. Notice the pattern: every option except one requires a person, a device and a location. That is not a criticism, hardware-based testing is legitimate and well validated. It is a design difference. The hardware options were built around inspections; the API option was built around sellers who need proof without leaving home.

What a legitimate certificate must contain

Whoever issues it, a certificate worth the name carries six things. A State of Health percentage, ideally with a stated accuracy range, TrustSeal prints plus or minus 2 to 4 per cent on every certificate, and any tester unwilling to state a range is telling you something. The VIN, binding the result to one specific vehicle. The methodology, in language a buyer can follow. The test date, because battery health is a moving figure and a certificate ages. When the buyer receives it, they receive it from the seller's hands, and they have no way to confirm it is real, unaltered, or about this car. It is a seller-shared document, and a sceptical buyer discounts it the same way they discount a screenshot, not because they think you forged it, but because they cannot prove you did not.

FAQ

Are hardware-based certificates like NRMA's less trustworthy than API-based ones?

How recent does a certificate need to be?

Can a certificate be faked?
