Your BYD's Battery Probably Isn't Degrading Much. Here's Why That's Not the Same as Proof.

Ask a BYD owner about their battery and you'll usually hear some version of the same line: LFP basically doesn't degrade. It's not a boast. It's close to true. BYD's Blade battery is one of the most durable packs on the road today.

That's exactly why proving it matters more, not less. A buyer who's heard the "LFP doesn't degrade" line before has also heard sellers say it about batteries that weren't fine. A strong chemistry doesn't defend itself in a negotiation. A number does.

A quick note before the rest of this, because it matters for who this post is actually useful to. What the Blade battery actually is

The Blade is BYD's own take on lithium iron phosphate, or LFP, chemistry, built in a cell-to-pack design that skips the traditional module step and packs the long, flat cells directly into the chassis. That design choice is part of what makes it distinctive: it trades a bit of energy density for a genuinely different safety and longevity profile compared with the nickel-based NMC packs most other manufacturers use.

BYD rates the Blade for more than 3,000 full charge cycles before capacity falls to 80% of original, comfortably ahead of the 1,000 to 2,500 cycles typical of nickel-based NMC packs, and some independent testing suggests real-world numbers can run higher under gentle use. Translated into distance, estimates land anywhere from the high hundreds of thousands of kilometres to well over a million depending on the model and its range, in every case far beyond what any owner will actually put on the car. Real-world tracking of Blade packs has found capacity commonly still sitting above 90% at around 200,000 km of mixed driving, which lines up with LFP's known advantage: a more stable internal chemistry that handles the everyday stress of charging and discharging with less wear than nickel-based cells.

None of that means degradation is impossible. It means it's slow, predictable, and rarely the reason a used BYD is actually worth less. The reason a used BYD sells for less is almost always that nobody could prove the good outcome actually happened on this specific car.

The 100% charging myth, and why it's the opposite of NMC

Here's where a lot of general EV advice actively misleads BYD owners. The common rule you'll see repeated everywhere, keep your daily charging between 20% and 80%, was written for NMC batteries, where sitting at a full charge creates real chemical stress. LFP doesn't share that weakness. BYD's own guidance is that Blade-equipped models can be charged to 100% regularly without the same penalty, and that doing so periodically, roughly every few weeks to every few months depending on the source, is actually good practice: LFP's very flat voltage curve means the battery management system relies on an occasional full charge to know exactly where 100% really is, and without one, the percentage on your dashboard can gradually drift from what the pack is actually doing.

That's a different thing from what an audit needs, and it's worth keeping the two separate in your head. Daily charging habits are about long-term wear and keeping your dashboard's own number accurate. A one-off audit, ours or anyone's, is about capturing a clean measurement over a specific, wide charge window, which is its own separate requirement regardless of your everyday charging routine. If you're about to run an audit and haven't done a full charge in a while, doing one first simply means the audit starts from a properly calibrated baseline rather than a drifted one.

This is the part the "LFP doesn't degrade" line skips entirely. Even a genuinely healthy pack is only worth what a buyer believes about it, and belief built on a chemistry's reputation alone is exactly as fragile as belief built on a seller's word.
